1.Michelle Handelman, FF Member, at Le Petit Versailles, August 10, 8:30 pm

August 10 Thursday 8:30 pm
“ This Delicate Monster” created by Michelle Handelman

“This Delicate Monster” is a multi-media pop fable inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s Flowers of Evil, a book of poems succulent and darkly suave as 19th-century Paris and Baudelaire himself. Michelle Handelman transposes the Flowers of Evil into a garden feast of excess and desire with multiple projections, live performances, organic foods and cocktails, creating a haunting and hallucinatory fragmented narrative best described as a cross between a music video, a pagan ritual and a Vogue fashion shoot gone terribly wrong. Collaborating with couture costume designer Garo Sparo and a cast of performers, Handelman visits the abyss of fear and the sublime – implicating the viewer every step of the way. A visceral experience not to be missed.

Michelle Handelman, video artist, performer and director of the critically acclaimed feature documentary BloodSisters (1999 Bravo Award) invites the viewer into her invented world of This Delicate Monster – a benevolent nightmare creating a new spin on the human condition – an abject space where meaning falls apart in a persistent and macabre performance of endurance.

2. Julia Heyward, FF Alumn, at Lincoln Center, July 27, 8:30 pm

“Miracles in Reverse” plus two new works in progress
July 27th at 8:30 pm at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center
part of the Scanners: NY Video Festival.
Julia Heyward -Heyward will be performing with elements of her large scale triptych “Nothing Random Access Memory” which includes the completed interactive version of “Miracles in Reverse” as well as work-in-progress versions of part two, “Points of View,” a series of ‘faux’ windows (including the artist’s own bedroom window, which looks out onto Cortland Alley, an often used film location featuring a continuous stream of Hollywood simulated violence) and part three “The Gabriel Frequency,” featuring the Archangel Gabriel the middleman of monotheism and the source of much of the conflicting revelations that to this day is at the core of the various infidel cleansings. All parts of the triptych deal with trauma and memory — some from a local/personal perspective others from a global/mythological perspective. Heyward will be performing with musician/collaborators Greg Smith, Mike Barron, Michael Kott and Collier Hyams. “Miracles in Reverse” was directed and designed by Heyward with music by Heyward and Greg Smith with Michael Kott, Dwight Loop and Greg Bowman; additional sound design by Don Christensen. The lingo prgamming is by Aishwarya Saigal.
This work was produced by generous grants from The Rockefeller Foundation’s Film/Video/Multimedia Fellowship , The Rockefeller Foundation’s Multi Arts Production Grant, The John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, The Greenwall Foundation, The New York State Council on the Arts
and The New York Foundation for the Arts. This project is sponsored through Harvestworks.
For more info and to purchase tickets:
http://filmlinc.org/wrt/onsale/scanners06/miraclesinreverse.html

“Miracles in Reverse” is an interactive DVD-ROM an audio visual album… a hybrid of a family album and a music album. “Miracles” is structurally and conceptually composed of loops ( music and visuals ). These designs explore the rhythms of the vicious cycles of associative and obsessive thoughts as well as other mantras. Within the programming design there is room for interpretation in the sense that the performer can literally play her ‘life movies’ like a musical instrument which evokes sounds and pictures. The narrative is centered around trauma and memory consistently traveling between the personal and the global with a kind of slippery Jungian spirit dipping into the collective unconscious, quantum theory, animism, neuroarcheology, and history reflexively. How we survive the memories, how we distort the memories, and how we store and access the memories gets equal time in this life’s reflections .

9. Nam June Paik, Yoko Ono, FF Alumns, in video to be released Sept. 15

NAM JUNE PAIK: LESSONS FROM THE VIDEO MASTER
45 minute video featurette plus DVD bonuses
by Skip Blumberg (& 46 collaborators)
Release date: September 15, 2006

In the new video DVD featurette “ NAM JUNE PAIK: LESSONS FROM THE VIDEO MASTER,” New York City’s art community remembers the wisdom of video’s first artist. Recorded earlier this year at the famed artist’s memorial service, there are  46 short visually-stylized often-humorous insightful interviews with friends, colleagues, collaborators and protégés; including Merce Cunningham, Yoko Ono, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Davidson Gigliotti ( Videofreex), Beryl Korot, Bill Viola and, of course, Shigeko Kubota as well as Nam June’s nephew Ken Paik Hakuta. And more.

Nam June Paik¹s work broke the rules of art, television, graphics, and, because TV can use all possible media and information, practically everything else, too.

Fast-moving and entertaining for all audiences, the new video is also an excellent learning tool and research source for media artists, art historians and students as well as an encyclopedia of special effects techniques.

12. C. Carr, FF Alumn, at Astor Place Barnes and Noble, TONITE

Dear Friends
This is just a reminder that I’m reading next Monday July 24 at the Astor Place B&N, 7 p.m—-from my book Our Town: A Heartland Lynching, A Haunted Town, and the Hidden History of White America. Thank you! Cynthia Carr

From the reviews:
“Carr’s search for a version of the truth gives her narrative the page-turning drive of a detective story. . . .One of the most fascinating and challenging explorations of [race] to arrive in a long time.” — Mother Jones

“Combines investigative journalism with an intensely personal family history…Outstanding.” — Publisher’s Weekly, starred review

“Haunted, obsessed. . . [James] Baldwin would have admired Carr’s intelligent, driven, traumatic reckoning.” — New York Newsday

“Unfolds like Rashomon with a cast of hundreds.. Righteous in its fight for truth.” –Entertainment Weekly, Editor’s Choice

“Carr joins the likes of Edward Ball and Diane McWhorter in helping lead America to the promised land of racial reconciliation that must come but cannot so long as the silence from the whites’ side is so deafening.” -Debra Dickerson, Elle

“An exhaustive, courageous examination of racism’s horrifying but sometimes very familiar face.” – Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“This beautifully written, detail-filled work brings together the historical and personal in a powerful and moving fashion and belongs on the shelves of every U.S. library.”- Library Journal, starred review

“When James Baldwin imagined a lynching through the eyes of a white sheriff in the short story `Going to Meet the Man,’ he was enacting his premise that American racism was most honestly explored from the standpoint of the racist…. I cannot think of a nonfiction author in this country who has so bravely taken up Baldwin’s dare.” Samuel G. Freedman, New York Times Book Review
