5. Sonya Rapoport, FF Alumn, in Leonardo, vol. 37, no. 3

Sonya Rapoport, FFAlumn, will have an article describing her Web project, SMELL YOUR DESTINY, published in LEONARDO, a Journal of the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology, volume 37, Number 3. June is the anticipated publication month.

Smell Your Destiny parodies our obsession with achieving success. Biomedical applications are now accessible for participants to choose their own personality traits in order to fulfill their ambition.

As we are scientifically able to determine and excise a defective gene, so will we be able to do the same with an uncooperative moral code. “Smell Your Destiny” is a fishy tale about fish exhaling value-changing personality traits as they float in community gene pools and ingest personality adapting pills. The traits will be actualized by participants breathing in the fume exhalation of fish, long considered brain food.

This fishy tale expands upon the pseudo-science of aromatherapy, providing ichthyological smells of personality traits for brain absorption. Smell Your Destiny parodies, as well, medicinal applications in vogue for personality changes; in this case, pills prescribed for success. To what extent will our ubiquitous obsession for success shape the cyber-personality and eventually its community? “Smell Your Destiny” provides a clue to this looming question through interactive selections on the web.

New Yorkers! Thanks to everyone who knocked last Tuesday’s First Amendment Mob out of the park. Keep up the momentum this Tuesday and come to Ground Zero at 6:30pm, in the PATH station, to recite the Amendment that codifies our right to free speech, worship, press, and assembly. YOU and YOUR WORDS are essential.

If you are outside of NYC, recite the First Amendment wherever. If you are home with children, speak it to them. What if a child’s first sentence began with “Congress shall make no law..?”

–The First Amendment to the US Constitution–
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
