Franc Palaia, FF Alumn, will be presenting a solo show at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY Feb 14-March 20, 2003. The show entitled-“Illuminated Landscapes” is a photo-sculptural installation of recent works, (2000-2003) that include back-lit panoramic digital Duratrans and mirrors. Imagery includes Roman aqueducts, viaducts, bridges and classic American architecture. Several 3-dimensional works include movement and sound. Internationally-acclaimed poet Pamela Sneed takes the stage at POETS4LIFE for an evening of “lyrical, provocative, humorous and potent” poetry and performance art.
Pamela Sneed is a New York based poet, solo performer and actress. She has been featured in the New York Times Magazine, The Source, Time Out, Bomb, Next, VIBE and on the cover of New York Magazine. She is the author of Imagine Being More Afraid of Freedom Than Slavery, published by Henry Holt in 1998. She has also performed original works for sold out houses at Lincoln Center, The Brooklyn Anchorage, The Studio Museum, Exit Art, P.S. 122, Ex-Teresa in Mexico City, The ICA London, The CCA in Glasgow, Scotland, The Green Room in Manchester, England, and Literatur Werkstat in Berlin. In 2001 and 2002 she headlined the New Work Now festival at the Joseph Papp Public Theater and again performed before sold out houses. In 1998, she was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award. She is a recipient of the Franklin Furnace Award for Performance, two Joyce-Mertz Gilmore commissions for P.S.122 and a residency at the corporation of Yaddo. Her current publications include work in 110 Stories, New York Writes After Sept 11, Brown Sugar, An Anthology of Black Erotica, Role Call and The Other Countries Journal. She is at work on the manuscript, 20 Minutes Was Forever.

80 Washington Square East Galleries is please to announce the 26th Small Works Exhibition on view from February 1 to March 14, 2003. An opening reception will be held for all the artists on Saturday, February 1st from twelve to four p.m. The public is invited and inquiries are welcome.
For over a quarter of a century the Small Works Show has provided a forum for both established and undiscovered artists working in small format. Small Works offers the opportunity to see in one place in New York City hundreds of artworks selected from thousands of local and international entries.
This year’s Small Works was juried by Tatyana Okshteyn, Owner/Director of the Black & White Gallery in Brooklyn, and the exhibit includes artworks in every medium imaginable. The unique concept of the competition dictates that all works submitted for possible exhibition measure twelve inches or less in every dimension. Throughout the years, tens of thousands of artists contributing from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and our own hemisphere, have challenged this size restriction with innovative and exciting creations. Although often imitated, the diversity and consistent quality of artworks exhibited in the Small Works Show is rarely matched.

GOBBLEDYGOOK: Sex in Art: denial, obsession and obfuscation The title of this show references the often-cited obscurantism of art theory and impenetrability of much philosophy. It also serves to draw a link between talking incoherently and at the same time giving pleasure to another: the word gobbledygook deriving from the name given to the action of a whore performing fellatio. Thirdly the title suggests the denial, by talking nonsense, of the concealed sexual impulses that are channelled into art practice and are the root of much of its production. The sublimated pleasure that art affords is brought to the surface, eschewing guilt, shame and helping us to see more clearly what the life and nature of the human is. Artist’s works selected for this show all have a relationship to these different but closely related ideas of denial, obsession, obfuscation, interpretation and delight. The Love a Commuter Project – Thousands Will Be Loved
February 14th, 2003: Valentine’s Day
All day throughout the New York City subway system
We’ve all heard about the singles who congregate in the front car of the subway in search of love and we know what an emotional roller-coaster of a year it’s been for commuters within the 5 boroughs. At last the artists-turned-commuter-lovers for a day are back again, with The Love a Commuter Project 2003. Thousands of unsuspecting commuters will find themselves loved at various subway stations throughout New York City on Valentines Day, 2003.
For the third annual Love a Commuter Project artists will distribute tokens of love and proffer Valentines Day performances on the New York City Subway system. Led by multi-disciplinary artists María Alós and Nicolás Dumit Estévez, artists will surprise Valentine’s Day commuters with actions and gifts that evoke the true spirit of love in New York – the love of strangers in close confines, love in the subway. Highlights will include Nicolás Dumit Estévez descending blind folded into the 110th and Lexington station
distributing roses at 5 pm, Lulu LoLo and her 214 Fans of Love at Union Square at 10 am, Love Tattoos by Jillian McDonald at Grand Central Station from 2 – 6 pm and Love Bandages in Flushing Queens Main Street Station by the No. 7 line from 5 -7 pm by Rebecca Hermann. Look for love at your nearest subway station. Commuter Lovers may be identified by the armbands that Nancy Hwang has created for the project.

This is a newly completed .mp3 version of one the technolectures from “Conductor Number Seventeen.” This particular technolecture along with 6 other technolectures will be given this Saturday, February 8th, 10pm at Collective Unconscious in NYC.
The title of the lecture is “A Fever Lecture.” The “music” part of the lecture was re-mixed at 7:12pm on Tuesday, February 4th, 2003. The voice track was recorded at 8:10pm and quickly deleted at 8:30pm and then a vocal-preamble was recorded for the piece beginning at 8:42pm. The preamble was edited once at 9:03pm, eliminating what the artist (me) deemed excessive use of the of the word “goddamn.” At 9:15pm the .aiff file was converted to an .mp3 file and then promptly uploaded at 9:20pm for public reception at http://www.restlessculture.net/downloads/fever_lecture.mp3
The piece runs at 10 minutes, 14 seconds. It is an 11.7 MB download. This time is too long by popular music standards, however “A Fever Lecture” is not intended as popular music. I have a 56k dial-up connection and the piece took exactly 23 minutes to upload so 56k users could expect roughly the same amount of time for the download. I imagine if you have a DSL/cable connection or better this will be no problem.
Between now and May 2003 I will release 6 additional lectures from “Conductor Number Seventeen” for download in .mp3 format.
