A pretty ordinary white nationalist family falls into a muddy and desperate identity crisis when they are attacked by La Contaminación Cultural. Their sense of language, grammar and origin gets altered, making them confused of who they really are.

In this comedic play a family falls in a crisis when their son learns two words in Spanish at school. The crisis produced by this event reveals that Donnie the father was born of Mexican parents and Hanna, his wife is of Irish origine. The neighbors find out that there’s a Mexican in the neighborhood and they are worried about the value of their property to go down. With a song “We hate you” they end up (symbolically) killing Donnie.

In the epilogue dead Donnie will explain what happened to the evangelists the day that Jesus returned, at the same time that they were rapturing.

The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art is pleased to present the culmination of a multiyear international art tetralogy by Tamar Ettun. Jubilation Inflation unifies different areas of the artist’s practice in a multifaceted examination of trauma, healing, and radical empathy.

On view in the museum’s East Gallery from October 12 to December 15, 2018, this solo exhibition consists of several parts. At the center, there is an intimate compartment containing an installation of interactive audio work. It is surrounded by mixed media sculptures, experimental videos, and four inflatable room-sized environments where visitors will be enveloped by a climate of vivid color. Influenced by the avant-garde individualism of mid-twentieth century art movements such as Fluxus and Gutai, Ettun asks us to explore the experience of play. Playfulness, in the context of her work, offers us a chance to process our engagement with the world.

Movement is essential to Ettun’s work, even her still sculptures have been constructed so that they seem to gesture like human bodies. Made from cloth and found objects, they encounter the space of the gallery with an aura of vulnerable personhood. That atmosphere of vulnerability extends into the snug central area of the exhibition where a video shows us how interactions with soda bottles, sardine tins, and other commodities can become primal expressions of alarm and desire. Flights of paratroopers in another video invert their encounter with the sky and float back into their planes.

A video program of colorful, feminist, funny, and poetic works composed by Ettun will accompany the exhibition. This program will include works by Alika Cooper (Chthonic (Ivy), 2018), Cheryl Donegan (Cheryl , 2005), Trulee Hall (The Blue Fertile, 2018), Joan Jonas (Reanimation, 2010/2012/2013), and Jen Liu (Pink Slime Caesar Shift, 2018).
Local dancers from the UNLV Department of Dance will perform Blue from the repertoire of The Moving Company, a performance art ensemble led by Ettun. A collaborative rehearsal process led by the mover Tina Wang will reinterpret Blue with specific motions and placements. This piece is a live improvisation of ritual-like actions that interweave personal vocabularies of object-oriented movement with a contemporary community.
The question of negotiating a world where we are exposed to both pain and joy has played a constant role in Ettun’s career. The human potential for transformation through empathy has absorbed her since her upbringing in Israel where she lived with two siblings suffering from cystic fibrosis and eventually witnessed the numbing impact of institutional brutality when she was conscripted into a military parachute regiment as a young adult.

“I observed closely how dealing with trauma and PTSD increases rigidity and shuts down communication, as conversation requires a flexible position and contains the potential to change and be changed by another person,” she says. “This personal experience led to some of the themes of my practice today – for instance, my resistance to simple binaries of right and wrong, which I experience through the fluidity of play and the senses.” The metamorphosis of parachute fabric from a vehicle for martial aggression into the soft, bright walls of her inflatable rooms typifies the alchemy she creates. Her structured spaces reveal the human spirit through simple materials such as fabric, inflated air, tape, stitches, ropes, and wood.
Each previous iteration of the tetralogy has found new ways to draw connections between color and emotion, dividing the project into blue/empathy, yellow/desire, pink/aggression, and orange/ joy. Jubilation Inflation brings all four elements together for the first time, introducing Las Vegas and the Western United States to the world of Tamar Ettun at a crucial moment in her career.

Audio walls include sound pieces from The Moving Company performances and videos by Helado Negro with voice by Maia Karo (Yellow), Nire (Pink), and Atteler (Blue). The title for the exhibition is inspired by On Orange, a poem by Rose McLarney.

This project is funded in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Tamar Ettun is a sculptor and a performance artist based in Brooklyn, New York. She has had exhibitions and performances at Art Omi Sculpture Garden, The Watermill Center, e-flux, Sculpture Center, Knockdown Center, Madison Square Park, Bryant Park, Socrates Sculpture Park, Indianapolis Museum of Art, The Jewish Museum, Uppsala Art Museum, Fridman Gallery, Braverman Gallery, PERFORMA 09, 11 and 13, among others. She received awards and fellowships from The Pollock Krasner Foundation, Franklin Furnace, MacDowell Fellowship, Marble House Project, RECESS, The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Art Production Fund and Iaspis. Ettun founded The Moving Company, an artist’s collective creating performances in public spaces and a social engagement project with Brooklyn teens hosted by The Brooklyn Museum. Ettun received her MFA from Yale University in 2010 where she was awarded the Alice English Kimball Fellowship. She studied at Cooper Union in 2007, while earning her BFA from Bezalel Academy, Jerusalem. She teaches at Columbia University School’s of Arts, Lehman College, and The New School Parsons School of Design. ORANGE, the final performance of the tetralogy will premiere at Pioneer Works in 2019.

ART IN ODD PLACES 2018: BODY, curated by Katya Grokhovsky, presents 45 projects by women, female identifying, and non-binary artists. The theme BODY explores agency, politics and status of the “other” in an urban environment, through various media including performance, installation, sculpture, photography, sound, video, and text.
This year, forty five selected local, national and international participants challenge notions and societal constructs of gender, age and beauty, analyze contemporary ideas of self, death, sex, viscera and health, explore issues of otherness, body image, language, memory and belonging through staging of multimedia interdisciplinary projects, movement and participatory works, artifacts and ephemera, considering issues of exclusion, displacement and absence in the current discourse.
Art in Odd Places aims to stretch the boundaries of communication in the public realm by presenting artworks in all disciplines outside the confines of traditional public space regulations. AiOP reminds us that public spaces function as the epicenter for diverse social interactions and the unfettered exchange of ideas.
There are two components to AiOP: a gallery exhibition opening Thursday, October 4th, 6-8 pm, running until October 27th; and a public outdoor festival all along 14th Street, which opens on Thursday, October 11th, 6-8 pm, and runs through Sunday, October 14th.

Verónica Peña is an interdisciplinary artist and independent curator from Spain based in the United States. Her work explores the themes of absence, separation, and the search for harmony through Performance Art. Peña is interested in migration policies, cross-cultural dialogue, and women’s empowerment. Recent works include experimental participatory performances that create shared moments amongst strangers. Peña has performed in various countries around Europe, Asia, and America. In the United States, her work has been featured at Times Square, Armory Show, Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics, Queens Museum, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Grace Exhibition Space, Triskelion Arts, Defibrillator Performance Art Gallery, Momenta Art Gallery, Gabarron Foundation, Dumbo Arts Festival, and Consulate General of Spain in New York, amongst others. She is a recipient to the Franklin Furnace Fund 2017-18. She was a recipient of the Socrates and Erasmus Grants, a Universidad Complutense de Madrid Fellowship, and a candidate for the Dedalus Foundation Grant. She has published “The Presence Of The Absent”, a thesis about her body of work. She was a visiting artist at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She curates “Collective Becoming”, an initiative to make cities a place less hostile. TULLIDO, the new performance-dance project by interdisciplinary artist, HECTOR CANONGE, will have its world premiere in the program Take Root at Green Space in Long Island City, Queens, on Friday, October 12th and Saturday, October 13th, 2018. The solo performance-dance project was inspired by literary readings about the “crippled body” and “corporal damage,” as well as the artist’s own battle against Rheumatic Fever. Canonge’s new work incorporates elements of dance theater, Butoh Dance, Performance Art, and ritualistic somatic expressions that evoke internal struggles, physical constraints, and personal inadequacies when confronted by physical challenges. The work, divided in three chapters, consists of choreographed movements, performative actions, and experimental dance with mixed sounds by Cronosonic Gems. In a recent interview, Canonge explained:

“In 2009, I began to incorporate Performance Art to my art practice. Since my first presentation at Topaz Arts in Queens, my performances have integrated elements of movement where choreographed instances are an important element of corporal resistance and aesthetic fluidity. I was not dancing, yet I was moving, and the movement that I created for my performances was noticed by critics and gallerists. Following the advice of a colleague, I was encouraged to explore Butoh Dance. My return to the dance studio, after years of battling and recovering from Rheumatic Fever, was a revelation. Butoh became my new dance practice, first in Germany, and since 2015, in New York City where I met my mentor and teacher Vangeline. Since then I have studied with Vangeline Theater and the Butoh Institute’s workshops with Katsura Kan, Yumiko Yoshioka, Atsushi Takenoushi, Tetsuro Fukuhara, and Mari Osanai, among others. The proposed work, an allegory to transformation, rediscovery, and self-realization, is a piece that evokes my own medical story/history as well as the struggles of people affected by long term ailments.”

Short Biography:
Hector Canonge is an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and cultural producer based in New York City. His work incorporates various forms of artistic expression: Performance Art, Experimental Dance, Multimedia Installation, and Social Practice to explore and treat issues related to constructions of identity, gender roles, and the politics of migration. Challenging the white box settings of a gallery or a museum, or intervening directly in public spaces, his performances mediate movement, endurance, and ritualistic processes. Some of his actions and carefully choreographed performances involve collaborating with other artists and interacting with audiences. His performances and media installations have been presented and exhibited in the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia. Canonge

As cultural producer, Canonge founded and direct the annual Performance Art Festival of NYC, ITINERANT, and started the initiatives: ARTerial Performance Lab (APLAB), an initiative to foster collaboration among performance artists from the Americas, PERFORMEANDO, a program that focuses on featuring Hispanic performance artists living in the USA and Europe, NEXUS a performance platform for Miami Art Week, and PERFORMAXIS, an international residency program in collaboration with galleries and art spaces in Latin America. As curator, he has organized exhibitions at Queens Museum, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Centro Cultural Santa Cruz, Space 37 Gallery, and Visual AIDS. He started the monthly artists’ program A-LAB Forum at Crossing Art Gallery, and created the monthly independent film series CINEMAROSA. Canonge’s work has been reviewed by The New York Times, ART FORUM, Art in America, New York Daily News, Manhattan Times, Hispanic Magazine; by major networks ABC, NBC, CNN, CBS, UNIVISION, etc., and online by Art Experience NYC, Hyperallergic, Turbulence, Art Card Review, and New York Foundation for the Arts’ bulletin NYFA News. 21. Sheryl Oring, FF Alumn, at Ringling College of Art and Design, Sarasota, FL, opening October 12
Sheryl Oring, FF Alumn, will present a mid-career survey show of her work at Ringling College in Sarasota, FL. “Agitype: Changing the World One Letter at a Time” features a collection of work from the past two decades. Oring’s “Writer’s Block” sculptures, originally created in Berlin as a tribute to the writers whose books were burned in Nazi Germany, will be on display as well as 50 monoprints featuring quotes from postcards sent to President Trump as part of her “I Wish to Say” performance. The college also commissioned a new work, “After the Dinner Party,” which will be performed during opening and closing events at the gallery; visitors will be asked which woman in history they would like to have dinner next to and why and their answers will be typed and included in the show.

OPHELIA’S DOMAIN is as site-specific multi-channel video-installation and solo exhibition at Nube Gallery in Santa Cruz, Bolivia from September 27 to November 2, 2018, curated by Rodrigo Rada. The week of the exhibition opening was accompanied by a Masterclass at the Faculty of Arts of the State University UAGRM and a workshop at Centro Cultural Simón I. Patiño Santa Cruz.

OPHELIA’S DOMAIN features the video of an underwater performance, stills from the live performance in San Francisco and Ophelia memes found in the worldwide web. The artwork invokes historical icons Ophelia (John Everett Millais, 1852), Three Ball Total Equilibrium Tank (Jeff Koons, 1985), and The Werld (Daniil Kharms, 1939) to merge body, art, science, and technology.

The 21st century OPHELIA is counterfeit by thousand of Ophelia memes of various authors, playfully multiplying and democratizing the icons one-dimensional symbolism, inherent hierarchy, and hidden ideology. The exhibition OPHELIA’S DOMAIN aims to symbolically transform a patriarchal past into the power of consciousness and fluidity. It speaks to the human desire for drama and tragedy and warns of potent self-destruction.

OPHELIA (How to make a performance) was a masterclass by Nadja Verena Marcin that took place on September 25, 6-8 pm at Faculty of Arts of the State University UAGRM. The same week Marcin also gave the workshop OPHELIA: PIY (Perform It Yourself) at Centro Cultural Simón I. Patiño Santa Cruz from September 26 to September 29, 10-1 pm, 2018.

OPHELIA: PIY (Perform It Yourself) was a workshop exploring performance, photography and video art as ways of reflecting on social and political constructs, human behavior and elemental emotions. In a three day workshop, the students were guided to develop their own performances.

Afterwards, OPHELIA will be shown at the Creative Climate Award of the Human Impact Institute in New York from September 17 to October 12, and Nube Gallery in Santa Cruz in Bolivia from September 27 to November 2, 2018, accompanied by a workshop at Centro Cultural Simón I.
