From a child’s dream of finding an orange bluebird to a puppet-projection story about seeing your ex, Dobkin’s empowering 1998 “Utopia Roaming” presents a range of tales using 16 mm film projections, music, oversized props, puppetry, skits, lesbian love potions, audience-engaging art auctions and more. Ears To The Ground: An Ethnography Of Material, Sound And Conversations
This is a multimedia project that seeks for points of encounter and solidarity in Tulsa, Oklahoma between Black and Latinx communities. This project explores the intersection of Black and Latinx identities through the research of the material and sonic geography of these communities. Further, it looks into the archive as well as documenting on-the-ground conversations among Tulsans to learn about history, place, similarities, differences, and envisioning new possibilities for these communities.
Artist Bio:
An Afro-Caribbean-Latinx-queer-person raised-by-their-grandmother, Francheska Alcántara explores slippages between memories, fragmentations, and longing.
Alcántara graduated with a MFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University, a BFA in Painting from Hunter College, and a BA in Art History from Old Dominion University. They have shared their work at the Brooklyn Museum, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, the Queens Museum, La Mama Theater, and Longwood Art Gallery. Francheska is a US Navy Veteran and a current fellow at the Tulsa Artist Fellowship.

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and Project Third (P3), Fine Arts: Decolonial Art Pedagogies present the Fall Forum 2021: Pedagogies of Reparation and Rebuilding featuring several ongoing collaborative initiatives—currently underway within Pratt — concerned with implementing and developing pedagogies of reparation and rebuilding. The Forum will gather members of the Pratt community for two days of discussion aimed at expanding notions of education and equity, from classroom dynamics to systems of governance and administration, from archiving histories to BIPOC and queer-driven projects of radical inclusion and participation. Presenters will share ideas and practices for promoting equitable learning opportunities through decolonial approaches to an inclusive curriculum and pedagogy. Raising critical questions about how to respond to the myriad crises which were laid bare—once again—by the COVID19 pandemic and their effects within Pratt, the Forum features sessions that consider repairing or rebuilding learning environments, institutional structures, and social politics through the lenses of race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, gender, and disability. To deemphasize traditional conference presentations, the Fall Forum presents mostly collective endeavors. “Collective” means collaborations among faculty, within a department, across departments, between staff, faculty, and students, or engagements beyond Pratt.

Vielmetter Los Angeles congratulates Pope.L on the opening of Misconceptions, his first solo video exhibition in Germany at Portikus in Frankfurt. The exhibition features a new video work titled Missverständnisse. It consists of several episodes produced in the format of a TV quiz show and filmed at Portikus and other places around Frankurt’s city center. The exhibition is curated by Christina Lehnert.

“According to Borges, the Aleph is a point in space that contains all other spaces all together. Anyone who looks at it can see clearly and all at once the entire universe from every possible angle without being disoriented. Zahir is quite the opposite. It can be an object or a person that has the power to materialize an obsession in the mind of everyone who sees it. The person affected by Zahir perceives lesser reality and more of the Zahir, at first only while asleep, then at all times. So whereas viewing the Aleph causes the observer to see all things, viewing the Zahir causes the observer eventually to see nothing but it. The world Jeff Bliumis sees is the staging of both perpetual dynamic and inexhaustible principles. Bliumis is convinced that art is an activity founded on immediacy and on the evidence of the supremacy of each individual’s unique imagination over common sense, rules and doctrines. The artist creates images framing selected details of the life he witnesses. He sketches rapid drawings of people and places in his notebooks that become paintings and sculptures in his studio. He fools us with images that are tropes, visual metaphors meant to provoke the viewers’ sight and bring out the ambiguities of our perception. Bliumis’ metaphorical imagination is driven solely by the wish to understand and grasp the significance of the characters’ actions, the meaning of the situation in which they find themselves. Not only does he express in a visual image what is happening, each work expresses an ineffable existential situation.”

What is your relationship to water?
What are your future dreams for water?
Please join me for Rivers, Dreams, Invisible Cities, a workshop on Saturday, September 18, from 1-2:30 pm in the Works on Water House on Governors Island.
During the workshop, you are invited to respond to prompts centered on your past and present relationships to water and future dreams for water wherever you live. We will share our stories in small groups and collaboratively create a text-based visual map illustrating our collective dreams for water.
The workshop is part of an installation I am creating inside the Works on Water House comprised of suspended cyanotype prints on silk with images illustrating past and present trajectories of New York City waterways whose shorelines are cut off from city residents. Each print will highlight the history of an individual water body, and their merging will manifest a reimagined city water system. The exhibition opens on October 2, 2021, from 2-5 pm. Workshop attendees may opt-in to have their stories incorporated into the installation.

Spanning painting, sculpture, and works on paper, Raquel Rabinovich: Portals features a selection of works from series made throughout Rabinovich’s prolific career and across different geographies. Exploring what she calls the “dark source,” the artist attempts to reveal how that which is concealed emerging into view, making the invisible visible. Shown together, they reveal how her practice has evolved from her early years working in the cultural hub of Buenos Aires, to her immersion in the experimental art scene of 1970s New York City, to her time spent in rural upstate New York as a mature artist, all while in pursuit of creating portals to the elusive “dark source.”

Over the course of three award cycles, more than 3,000 artists will receive $5,000 grants to engage the public with artist activities across New York City’s five boroughs this summer and fall. Artists can use the grant to create new work or phase of a work, or restage preexisting creative activities across any discipline.
Members of the public can participate in City Artist Corps Grants programming by following the hashtag #CityArtistCorps on social media.
City Artist Corps Grants was launched in June 2021 by NYFA and DCLA with support from the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) as well as Queens Theatre. The program is funded by the $25 million New York City Artist Corps recovery initiative announced by Mayor de Blasio and DCLA earlier this year. The grants are intended to support NYC-based working artists who have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. It is strongly recommended that a portion of the grant be used to support artist fees, both for the applying artist and any other artist that are engaged to support the project.

However, Martin Buber certainly had the analogue version in mind in his much-quoted sentence on this term. To what extent the quality of encounter has changed after the digital flights in the times of the pandemic is to be explored visually and in action during the five days of the festival.
To this end, the Internationale Performance Association (IPA), under the artistic direction of Hanau artist Jürgen Fritz, has invited 20 national and international artists as well as artists from Frankfurt am Main and Hanau.

Galerie Robertson Ares announces the opening of Aether, a solo exhibition for the Canadian sculptor Sydney Blum on September 10th, with the artist in attendance.
For Aether, Sydney Blum presents a new body of work that embodies the longing to soar, touch the sky, reach beyond the clouds into an unknown space. The work beckons one to enter a liminal place that flows with the spirit of air.
This bold exhibition, open until October 2nd, 2021, includes two distinct series of work. Icarus Colour-Space sculptures are created of complex forms and gradations of hues, which ripple and contrast, expanding with space and light. The group of prints, Mapping Icarus, are bold shapes cut to float off the wall to give dimension to the energy they radiate.
The second series, Hungry for the Cosmos / Space Kabobs, creates a deeper conversation with the Aether. Through vibrant and playful shapes of colour, pattern, and form — asteroids landed from outer space — they speak through frolicking, fanciful variations. They can be rotated and turned to create completely different experiences, thus delighting with the formal concerns of a sculptural vocabulary and the leap between the familiar and the ethereal.
Sydney Blum (b. 1950, Oneida) lives and works in Nova Scotia. She has a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a Master of Social Work from New York University. She has been widely reviewed in art publications such as Art Forum, Art News, Art in America, The New York Times, Sculpture Magazine, Arts Magazine, Village Voice and many others. She has been the recipient of two Creation Grants through Arts Nova Scotia since moving there in 2009. She taught in the fine art department at The New School/Parsons for 16 years and practiced as a psychotherapist for more than 30 years.

LuLu LoLo brings to life memories of her Italian immigrant Grandfather Giovanni Pascale who recited Dante, loved opera, and shined shoes to make a living in two consecutive performances with dance, opera, and Dante Alighieri’s La Divina Commedia.

In this exhibition, there are four recent Color Crowd paintings, painted with oil on canvas. Two are rectangular and two are tondos. The imagery is arranged in complex ensembles that rise from the bustle of my thoughts and feelings as they reveal themselves in the making.
The two larger rectangular paintings are divided by a caesura, a kind of seam at which the forms on either side of it don’t match. In one the seam is vertical and in the other it is horizontal.
Two small diptychs from the A/Z group of 1974 are included. In each, vertical brushstrokes on one panel are interrupted by a horizontal pencil line that also removes paint, while in its counterpart the opposite happens. The gap between the two when they are installed is the pivotal void that links them.
I have also made two small Relocation paintings to activate the wall above a white and a black cabinet in the gallery. The white painting is placed above the black cabinet and the Black above the white.
