Gender constructions and their norms surround us all in each and every facet of our lives. Anita Loomis’ “Female Deviations: Autobiographies of Desire” studies these concepts and society’s subsequent influences over gender and sexuality. In her 1996 multi-media performance piece at Dixon Place, New York City, Loomis explores gender’s constricting language and conventions, (i.e how it dictates what one wears or how one looks). In this 33-minute performance, the artist engages the audience in the exploration of her own sexuality with various anecdotes from childhood to adulthood. “Female Deviations” is Loomis’ cerebral and physical investigation of pleasure, desire, erotic self-expression, the notion of unified sexual identity, and the ways in which society suppresses us from the youngest ages. PANELISTS:
PATRICK CALIFIA is a writer, retired therapist, editor, and activist. He has been involved with the leather community since the late 1970s. He was central to the founding of Samois, the first lesbian feminist S/M support group, and has tried through writing and lectures to educate people about sex and gender diversity. His books include Sapphistry and Macho Sluts, which were controversial texts that were targeted by censors in Canada and by antiporn feminists during the Lesbian Sex Wars. At the age of 45, he decided he could no longer put off dealing with his gender issues, and began the process of transitioning from female to male. He lives in Portland, OR with his cat, Delilah, a lot of craft supplies, many whips and other adult toys for transformation, and shelves full of books. He continues to write and do public speaking.
QUEEN COUGAR became a leatherwomyn in 1990 in the Bay Area. She is currently active in the leather community as a titleholder, activist, educator and mentor. Over the years, she has received many awards and has become a sought-after Emcee, contest judge and popular entertainer throughout the United States. In 2013 the SF community held a tribute in honor of her 20 years of service, with proclamations including the naming of Queen Cougar Day and recognition from the SF Board of Supervisors and State Assembly. She is most proud of the many friendships and extended family she has been fortunate to grow with over the years.
PONY LEE has been a figure in the Los Angeles leather and kink community for over a decade. They are a member of ONYX Southwest, founder of the Leather tent at Dyke Day LA, founder of Cruise LA, and producer of the first non-binary leather title in Los Angeles. Outside leather, Pony is owner of Folklore Salon & Barber, the premiere Los Angeles salon that centers its craft and services around the needs of the LGBTQ community.

Dear Friends,
We are thrilled to announce that after closing our doors in March because of the pandemic, ICA LA will reopen and welcome audiences back to the museum beginning Saturday, September 26.
These past months of quarantine have compressed our sense of space and time. It has been a period of slowing down and introspection, a time to carefully consider what is immediately in front of us and notice the enormous value of our communities. So, it is fitting that our fall exhibitions celebrate the work of two exceptional Los Angeles-based artists: Harold Mendez and Stanya Kahn. Both artists create works that offer profound insights into how today’s culture is informed by the past and sensitize us to the precarity, fragility, and beauty of life. Their works dance on the narrow edge between truth and fiction with a poignancy that reminds us how important it is to think critically and to participate in shaping the future of our society. In the midst of an election season, these exhibitions fittingly advocate for civic engagement, each in their own idiosyncratic way.
Next week, Field Workshop: Action Projects continue with Space Saloon’s Climate Crisis Hotline where the artists create a safe confessional space to respond to our collective environmental distress. Dorit Cypis brings her PeoplesLab project with an exploratory session titled The Color of Whiteness. On August 31, Paul Pescador introduces workshops for PSA, a collaborative project to create Public Service Announcement-style videos about the mechanisms of government and public knowledge to be screened during the election season.
We miss you! We look forward to seeing you and sharing the work of these important Los Angeles artists. In order to keep our audiences and staff safe, we will be open by appointment with recommended safety protocols in place. Stay tuned for further details as we get closer to our opening date.

Stanya Kahn: No Go Backs
Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist Stanya Kahn (b. 1968, San Francisco)’s hybrid approach to film and video reorients fiction and document, the real and hyper-real through improvisation and candid, daily life scenarios. This exhibition presents three works by Kahn produced over the past ten years, including her latest film, No Go Backs (2020), marking its Los Angeles debut. Together, these videos offer an urgent reflection of our times, foregrounding global concerns such as climate change, racism, state power, and rebellion with the artist’s singular humor and embrace of experimental time and narrative.

This week the Church of Stop Shopping, Savitri D directing, helped find and encircle the residence of Patrick Lynch, don in a mafia of police who shoot unarmed black and brown people. As the head of the patrolmen’s union in New York City, he has legitimized murders with skillful statements in the media and hidden violent cops from the law.
The address of his residence was found in obscure court documents, and 150 of us – including survivor families – went out to a quiet side street in Bayside Queens to sing and chant for the injured and killed. This demystification of Lynch is a new approach and is born from Black Lives Matter. Union chief Bob Kroll in Minneapolis and similar official racists in other cities should be outed in creative, nonviolent ways. The starting point is to demonstrate our lack of fear.

Dear Friends,
I am recently back from Minnesota and resting up while under quarantine from my residency travel.
My Pollinator Rhyton, Agave and Bats is now installed within the prairie grasses and wildflowers at Franconia. It’s the only sculpture in the park that is embedded in the landscape this way, and I’m excited to see how it changes with the seasons.

The small gouaches on paper of the HardEdge Baroque group started in Rome in the mid 60’s. Flat color areas are placed next to one another. In the context of my painting story they contain elements that return in other cycles of my art.
The Scatter Paintings echo the Hardedge Baroque imagery inasmuch as both groups are not afraid of hinting at three-dimensional illusionism. The Scatter paintings, quick-drying acrylics on canvas, consist of overlapping hard-edged blocks of thick paint applied with large palette knives.
The Flower Group started in the 70’s when I became ever more impatient with branding in art. They are painted with slow-drying oil paint. Bundling biomorphic and geometric forms overlapping and alternating as a bustle that falls into- or explodes from a container, attracted me as yet another pictorial territory I could explore.

Le piccole tempere del gruppo HardEdge Baroque iniziarono a Roma negli anni ’60. Aree di colore uniforme sono accostate l’una all’altra. Nel contesto della mia storia contengono elementi che ritornano in altri cicli della mia arte.
Gli Scatter Paintings sono un’eco degli HardEdge Baroque in quanto in ambedue i gruppi non c’è timore di accennare all’illusionismo tridimensionale. Approfittando del breve tempo di asciugatura dell’acrilico, gli Scatter consistono nella sovrapposizione di forme ottenute con spatolate di colore spesso in zone delineate da nastro adesivo.
I Quadri di Fiori del Flower Group ebbero inizio negli anni ’70, quando mi ritrovai sempre più impaziente verso la pratica del marchio riconoscibile in arte. Sono dipinti con pittura a olio, a lenta asciugatura. Mi attirava affastellare forme geometriche e biomorfe che si alternano e scavalcano in un trambusto che precipita dentro un contenitore oppure ne esplode verso l’alto. Era un altro territorio da esplorare, una dimensione di nuovo fresca.

I quadri del gruppo Rag Rug (Tappeti di Stracci) incominciarono quando mi sono trovato a riciclare avanzi di pittura ancora fresca che era stata mescolata per altri lavori. Mi sono accorto che, come per i comuni tappeti di stracci, allineamenti di colori perfino scelti a casaccio risultano in tattili paesaggi mentali. Lungo gli anni sono tornato a questa tecnica in modi sempre differenti. I ‘Rag Rug Paintings’ sono stati esposti molte volte e ne sono stati pubblicati dei libri. Saranno anche esposti sul pavimento dei tappeti di scarti Boucherouite dal Marocco, di una collezione privata.
The “Rag Rug Paintings” started when I recycled wet leftover paint after it had been mixed for other works. I found that, like for common Rag Rugs, parallel ribbons of color, even randomly chosen, produce dense tactile landscapes of the mind. Over the years I have returned to this technique in different manners. The Rag Rug Paintings have been exhibited many times and some books have been published about them. Some Moroccan Boucherouite fabric scrap carpets from a private collection will be displayed on the floor.
