Weekly Spotlight: Pink Inc., FF Alumns, now online at https://franklinfurnace.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p17325coll1/id/77/rec/1

In 1992, Pink Inc., FF Alumns, presented “Nuts & Bolts,” an “art-in-motion” performance inspired by biology and the process of birth. The performance consists of moving soft-sculptures illustrating the dynamics of cellular evolution.

Here is the response of Mamou Samake, FF Intern, to the 25-minute video documenting Nuts & Bolts as follows: “This piece is all about growth and change. During this time, when so many in the world are confined to the rules of social distancing and quarantine, I know that I am not alone in feeling like change and growth are impossible or hard to measure. But this piece reminded me that even the smallest movements are important and that change comes in many different forms. This piece felt inspiring and had a playful and relaxing pace to it. A gentle reminder to keep evolving.”

Pink Inc.’s work continues to evolve and Pink Inc. founder Debra Roth is still innovating with fabric and sculpture. You can find her and her pink hair with The Originators www.Originatorsdesign.com @originatorsdesign and at her social handle @pinkdeb

From Talismans to Comfort Items
Billy X. Curmano and Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful Espejo perform with a Zoom Audience

Presented at Dixon Place as part of DPTV
Thursday, June 4, 7:30 PM

Two friends cloistered in their living quarters and studios, one by the Mississippi River and the other by the Bronx River, engage in a show-and-tell, more like a perform-and-tell, dealing with their creative lives from a place of isolation, but of great expansion as well. Drawing from a life-long art praxis that goes back long before they visited an art gallery or a museum, Billy and Nicolás focus on elements of their performances and their day-to-day to be with each other and those they touch in time and space. They also acknowledge the role of interruptions, shared rites of passages, and reinterpretations of hearsay and tales in their work and play. Billy and Nicolás integrate those in attendance by inviting them to share and discuss meaningful stuff that is part of their lives, from talismans to comfort items.

*** Those wishing to attend, please have with you a talisman or a comfort item that you can talk about when you join this event!

To RSVP and receive a Zoom link and passcode contact Nicolás: indioclaro@hotmail.com

Billy X. Curmano engaged in a 2,367.4-mile swim from the source of the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico as a performance and environmental statement. In another performance, he fasted on juice and water for 40 days, in Death Valley, seeking visions and enlightenment.

In 2011 Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful Espejo was baptized as a Bronxite by the Bronx River, by Bill Aguado and Susan Newmark Fleminger. In an earlier experience, he traveled from the Bronx to Berlin, Germany, where he surrendered his persona before entering the Czech Republic, where he embodied the Holy Infant of Prague, full time, for 5 days.

5. Nina Sobell, FF Alumn, in Camera Obscura, Spring 2020

I hope this finds you safe and well.

I am excited to share the news of this scholarly essay by art historian Cristina Albu. She explores the connections between my early video performances and brain wave installations. Albu perceptively reveals how intertwined these two sides of my practice are in my inquiry into alternative modes of visual communication. I deeply appreciate her insights.

8. Jeffrey Schrier, FF Alumn, now online on youtube.com

Hope you find my recently completed 7ft Covid Dragon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvSVw-_FzVg&feature=youtu.be

of interest. The work references the covenant of safety after the biblical account of the great flood, and the impact of the pandemic as we look with hope and trepidation, towards emerging. Covid Dragon is part of my series based on the Rothschild Pentateuch, acquired in 2018 by the Getty. My use of the beast from this manuscript as a restraining encasement of the Covid-19 protein spike, is my expression of hope that we are able to recognize safety as we emerge. The first mapped protein spike image was generously provided to me by Jason McClellan, head of the UT Bio-science lab that generated it. The illuminated calligraphy of folio 23 of the Getty manuscript, announces the end of the Noah narratives: the great flood; Noah’s ark; the covenant of safety expressed through a rainbow.

My FB art page https://www.facebook.com/jeffreyschrierstudio presents a wider view my Covid Dragon in relation to my series.

I produced this work on the heels of the Getty’s acquisition of my Pipesweat Domino, my narrative portfolio that references the personal impact of medical science breakthrough on my life and art.

Hope you are well and safe.

Michelle Handelman
These Unruly and Ungovernable Selves
May 28 – June 10, 2020

signs and symbols is pleased to present These Unruly and Ungovernable Selves, a video exhibition by Michelle Handelman as part of the gallery’s series of online-only solo presentations of video works during lockdown.

These Unruly and Ungovernable Selves is a new video work by Handelman that recontextualizes characters from her previous works into a hypnotic visual essay about the transfiguring of interiority during periods of isolation and fear. Handelman’s characters, who have already struggled with existential questions of belonging and fear in her projects Dorian, A Cinematic Perfume; Irma Vep, The Last Breath; and Hustlers & Empires, are placed among found images and texts that inhabit the pandemic, while simultaneously struggling with and denying containment.

Handelman writes: “While in lockdown I’ve been thinking about spaces of containment and agency, that agitated state where inertia rubs up against desire. And how periods of isolation force us to confront the things we fear and deny. When we find ourselves cut off from all that forms our identity, then who are we? For the past twenty years, I’ve built worlds of queer dystopias populated with characters that continue to live, struggle, and communicate, outside my control. So, as I’ve been checking in with old friends, I wanted to check in with them to see how they’re surviving isolation. I really wanted to see that they were free, breaking up into pixels and dancing with the stars. But they all told me that they still need more time — they’re still struggling with containment.”

Silvia Ziranek
IN OTHERED WORDS IYLR
This is a game for many ages, both visual and verbal: fun, stimulating, quirky, colourful. Knowledge of English is a definite asset as is a sense of playfulness and linguistic enterprise!
I have re-arranged the letters of a word or two in familiar phrases and it’s up to you to recognise which word has been ‘OTHERED’ and to work out the original spelling and meaning eg MADE>EDAM; EAR>ERA; so that HAPPY BIRTHDAY would be HAPPY DIRTHBAY (where BIRTHDAY=DIRTHBAY). Some letters can be re-arranged to make another word (and another meaning) some are just nonsense.
The game is to spot the ‘OTHERED’ word/s and to decipher – perhaps print out the original hand drawn phrase for colouring in for those who like to create patterns, and then – best of all – make your own OTHERED WORDS!! in your own lettering!!
Experiment with pronunciation and letter shapes and sizes, maybe try cutting out letters from old/free magazines, perhaps cut up a bit of spare fabric (old clothes?) so you can paint/draw or stitch your own OTHERED WORDS creation onto a t-shirt or a bag.
Get ready, steady…!!! OG MAN OG !!! >>>>> !!! GO MAN GO !!!

11. Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful Espejo, FF Alumn, now online at youtube.com

Dear Friends,

It is very sad to witness the apartheid in which our nation continues to live. My love and solidarity goes to my African American Brothers and Sisters from whom I have learned immensely and who have supported me since I moved to the U.S. May we find healing in the midst of all of the chaos and evidence of injustice that continues to surface. May we balance the inner and outer work at the moment of envisioning and working for a just society.

I am writing to share a video commissioned by Artist Relief that launched today and, which I filmed as the pandemic hit, and with the hope kindling some healing. This video includes simple exercises for wellness.

With love,
Nicolás
