Alice Eve Cohen is nominated for The New School’s Distinguished University Teaching Award! Cohen says, “The university is celebrating its centennial this year. I haven’t been teaching there quite that long, but I’m proud to have been on The New School faculty since 1999, the year I received my MFA from The New School Creative Writing Program.”

7. Julie Tolentino, FF Alumn, receives Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grant 2019
The New York-based nonprofit Foundation for Contemporary Arts has named the 18 artists who will receive unrestricted grants of $40,000 in its 2019 grant cycle.
The annual Grants to Artists program was established in 1993, and recipients are chosen by the foundation’s board of directors through a confidential nomination and selection process. The board includes artists Cecily Brown, Anne Collier, Jasper Johns, Jennie C. Jones, Julian Lethbridge, Glenn Ligon, Dean Moss, James Welling, and T. J. Wilcox. The board’s non-artist members are Anthony B. Creamer III, Anne Dias, and Agnes Gund.
Brown told ARTnews that the 2019 grant nominations were more geographically diverse and less “New York-centric” than in previous years, saying, “the net is spreading wider than it perhaps used to.”
“It’s always an overwhelming but fantastic experience seeing how much amazing stuff is out there that you might not otherwise know about,” she said. “One big thing is that [receiving a grant] is a sign of respect from your peers, and hopefully it can really help someone to not do their day job for a while and buy the time to really put into one’s own work. Even just being able to focus on one’s work full-time is a huge difference.”
This year, the board was joined in its selection process by Danspace Project executive director and chief curator Judy Hussie-Taylor; musician Jenny Lin; MoMA associate curator Yasmil Raymond; and director, playwright, poet, and performer Fiona Templeton. Poet Renee Gladman and artist Trevor Winkfield advised the committee for the poetry category.

Christopher Wool, Untitled, is now on view in The Fields.
Untitled is a large-scale bronze and copper plated steel sculpture, exhibited outdoors for the first time at Art Omi. In the past few years, Wool has cultivated a sculptural practice that intersects with his more widely known two-dimensional body of work. The sculptures demonstrate his penchant for appropriating existing forms, deriving their structure from ranching wire found around his property in Texas. The structures are uniquely defined by their coiled and twisted lines, evoking the silk-screened and spray painted contours found in the artist’s earlier two-dimensional work. The work will be on view at Art Omi through at least the end of 2019.
Christopher Wool is primarily known as a painter, his photographs, sculptures, artist books, and prints are also integral to his practice. Wool’s work has been presented at institutions around the world, including solo exhibitions at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1989); Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, and Kunsthalle Bern (1991); Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (1998), Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh (1998-99), and Kunsthalle Basel (1999); Institut Valencià d’Art Modern and Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain, Strasbourg (2006); Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Serralves, Porto (2008-09), and Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2009); Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (2012); and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Art Institute of Chicago (2013-2014). Wool currently lives and works in New York City and Marfa, Texas.

As part of Barbara Rosenthal’s year-long SEVENTIETH BIRTHDAY INTERNATIONAL RETROSPECTIVE, she has been honored with the inaugural of the curatorial organization MUU (which means “Other” in Finnish. http://www.muu.fi. She will speak about her 55 years as an artist, showing projections of her important works, such as HOMO FUTURUS WALL WORK, discuss her practice, and screen an hour of performance/text/photo-based videos 1976-2019.

Co-organized by YBCA and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Suzanne Lacy: We Are Here is the first full retrospective of the Los Angeles-based artist. At SFMOMA, visitors can explore Lacy’s entire career, from her earliest feminist work to her latest immersive video installations. Several projects on view honor the voices and contributions of women to public life.
The YBCA presentation offers a new, experimental approach to authorship and participation, inspired by Lacy’s own commitment to collaborative creation. YBCA will celebrate the rich legacy of youth work in the Bay Area through an in-depth focus on The Oakland Projects (1991-2001), a series on youth empowerment, media education, and policy, presented alongside works by contemporary artists, and youth arts and activist organizations. Both venues will host live activations in the galleries and a vibrant range of public programs.
The exhibition is jointly curated by SFMOMA Curator of Media Arts Rudolf Frieling, YBCA Curator-at-Large Lucía Sanromán, and Director of the Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University and former Curator of Education and Public Practice at SFMOMA Dominic Willsdon.

James Fuentes is pleased to present works by James Romberger, Anton van Dalen, and Martin Wong. The exhibition is presented alongside Jane Dickson, All That Is Solid Melts Into Air.
This exhibition brings together multifaceted portraits of a complex city. Romberger, van Dalen, and Wong were each close observers and keen documenters of life in New York City during the 1980s, a tumultuous and violent period. Their works are saturated with the brilliance and energy of the communities that surrounded them. Together, they offer a certain mythology of their lives in the city. Martin Wong (1946-1999) was a prolific painter of New York City’s gritty, textured cityscapes. His works stand as semi-autobiographical registers of the Lower East Side and Chinatown in the 1980s and ’90s, merging details of his life with a rich and poetic imagination. The New York Times describes Wong as “the self-dramatist; the mythologist; the existential tourist; and the virtuoso realist.” Oftentimes he employed trompe l’oeil effects, mimicking the characteristics of his surroundings in combination with other recurring motifs-constellations, billows of smoke, shuttered storefronts-that give these scenes an apparation-like quality. Wong moved to New York in 1978 and soon became friends with artists also moving into the East Village, including Charlie Ahearn, Jane Dickson, Julie Ault, and Keith Haring. He became close with poet and playwright Miguel Piñero, who often appears in his paintings. Poetry and text were also important to Wong, whether borrowing Piñero’s words or found within his ongoing series of works “for the hearing impaired.”
Anton van Dalen **(b. 1938) was born in the Netherlands, emigrating with his family to Toronto in 1954, then moving to Rivington Street in 1966. Van Dalen recalls arriving to an East Village that resembled the second world war that he left behind, riddled by urban flight, poverty, and drugs. He also describes an environment that was rich with crossing cultures, sharing space and life on the sidewalk. Van Dalen has lived in the East Village since this time. His paintings of the city contain abundant color and movement, often drafted from a semi-aerial perspective. Birds-specifically, carrier pigeons-appear frequently in van Dalen’s works. “The birds have really been my life since I was a child,” he explains. “Some people might call it an escape; I think of it as a parallel universe.” In a broader sense, they also stand a symbol of unity, carrying messages between vast divides.
James Romberger (b. 1958) is known for his pastel drawings and comic-strip work describing the city’s downtown in motion. Romberger often draws from memory, placing details from recollected scenes into the corners, rooftops, and alleyways of larger compositions. Living in the East Village since the 1980s, his works are at once dismal and exuberant, approaching an almost hallucinatory manner. In 1984 Romberger and Marguerite Van Cook opened the Ground Zero Gallery in the East Village, presenting multimedia installations and performance events. The pair also began publishing the comic strip Ground Zero, a semi- autobiographical, science-fiction collaboration drawing on their lives in the neighborhood. Around the same time, Romberger, Van Cook, and David Wojnarowicz began collaborating on the comic book 7 Miles a Second, based on Wojnarowicz’s autobiographical writings and illustrated by Romberger.
