PIPORNOT’s Superorganism features installation work, photos, paintings and video created by aricoco (Ari Tabei) and an interactive performance by aricoco and Julia Benedict (writer/theater maker) with the help of public participants. This exhibition is a culmination of aricoco’s collaborative research experiences as a Franklin Furnace fellow and an accumulation of performative actions prompted by altruistic behaviors of social insects.
The installation explores the existence of insect society as a superorganism — a highly specialized altru- istic community, where an individual is dependent on the greater system for survival. The immersive installation will emulate a human campsite, which is the closest meeting point of ant and human colonies. Guided by instructions, the audience will be invited to navigate the installation. aricoco, disguised as an insect queen, will need help of the audience to complete her ritual of surrendering her powerless body to the habitat. Through the performance, the careful relationship between the powerless insect queen (a symbol of decentralized power) and her sterile workers (a key to the al- truistic society) will be examined.

ANN HAMILTON’S FLY TOGETHER
A year full of extreme vulnerability and hardships could also be defined by camaraderie and tenacious collaborations: millions of people organized and took to the streets in the face of injustices, pressed their local lawmakers for change, rushed to airports to advocate for safe, legal returns home, and gave aid amidst disaster.
Today, as we raise Ann Hamilton’s Fly Together, we celebrate a year marked by alliance amidst a climate of turbulence. From daily acts of kindness and new friendships to brave voices that unite us en masse, we’re choosing to close the year through a lens of solidarity.
As the 7th flag in our Pledges of Allegiance series, we unfurl Fly Together in tandem with a dozen sites across the country, thanks to the help of colleagues from New York to Nebraska and many in between. Find a flag near you, bring a friend, and look up together!

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Pledges of Allegiance is a serialized commission of sixteen flags, each created by acclaimed artists to reflect the current political climate: Tania Bruguera, Alex Da Corte, Jeremy Deller, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Ann Hamilton, Robert Longo, Josephine Meckseper, Marilyn Minter, Vik Muniz, Jayson Musson, Ahmet Ögüt, Yoko Ono, Trevor Paglen, Pedro Reyes, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Nari Ward.
The flags embody art’s ability to channel political passion, providing a unifying symbol around which to unite. The project aims to inspire a sense of community among artists and cultural institutions. Each month a new flag will be raised on a flagpole atop Creative Time’s headquarters at 59 East 4th Street and at participating arts, educational, and cultural organizations across the country.

Dear Friends,
This December, I am excited to announce a new line-up of opportunities to share my work. First, earlier this month, I had the opportunity to participated in “No Commission Miami” a 3 day exhibition curated by Grammy award winning producer, Swizz Beatz. The exhibition was organized by Bacardi USA and the Dean Foundation, running parallel to Art Basel Miami.
Up next this week, I will have the opportunity to be back in New York to participate in a public talk at the Jewish Museum. Scheduled for 6:30 – 8PM on Thursday, Dec 14, I will be in conversation with fellow artist, Aliza Nisenbaum and moderator, Joshua Cohen, Assistant Professor of African Art History from the City College of New York. Together, we will revisit the work of Amedeo Modigliani through the 21st Century lens of formal and cultural appropriation, and each of our unique, layered understandings of identity.
Last, I am very excited to announce, The Master and Form, a new performance and installation, I am producing and will exhibit with the Graham Foundation in Chicago. The exhibition, which will open at the end of January, will be the culmination of a Fall 2017 performance artist residency I am currently attending at the Graham Foundation. The Master and Form will engage the Foundation’s historic Madlener House and features collaboration with designers, Norman Kelly and dancers from the Joffrey Academy of Dance, to explore themes of mastery and discipline within the culture of Ballet.

Wide Open Arts, the New York-based organizer of the Outsider Art Fair – the premier event for self-taught art, art brut and outsider art – is excited to announce its exhibitors for its 26th edition, taking place January 18-21, 2018 at The Metropolitan Pavilion. The fair will showcase 63 galleries, representing 35 cities from 7 countries, with 10 first-time exhibitors.
Coming off of a successful 5th Outsider Art Fair Paris, which posted a 24% gain in attendance over the previous year, the forthcoming New York fair will continue to highlight the global reach of its artists and dealers, and will include: ex-voto sculptures unique to Brazil’s Afro-Indigenous-European culture at Mariposa Unusual Art; and a collection of works by self-taught artists from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean at Indigo Arts. Korea Art Brut and Beijing’s Almost Art Project will make their OAF debuts, as will Antillean, who will present work by three Jamaican artists, each of whom use found materials to evoke shanty village life. Drawings by New Zealand’s Susan Te Kahurangi King will be the subject of a solo presentation at Chris Byrne and the sensational ceramic sculptures of Shinichi Sawada will be shown in New York for the first time at Jennifer Lauren Gallery.
The fair is pleased to welcome several new and dynamic presentations this year, including the Plains Indian Ledger Drawings from the 19th and the early 20th century at Donald Ellis Gallery; Norman Brosterman’s presentation of hand-painted, woven baskets attributed to Plains Indian inmates incarcerated at the Iowa State Penitentiary; and a series of miniature terracotta figurines by Canadian artist Jordan Maclachlan at Marion Harris. As always, the Outsider Art Fair will offer visitors the opportunity to see artworks from internationally acclaimed figures such as Eugene Von Bruenchenhein at Carl Hammer; Minnie Evans at Luise Ross, Bill Traylor at Cavin-Morris; Martin Ramirez at Ricco Maresca and Thornton Dial at Fred Giampietro.
OAF’s Curated Space will be organized by contemporary artist Saya Woolfalk, who will respond with her own work to Eddie Owens Martin’s (aka St. EOM) visionary environment Pasaquan, which he conceived in rural Georgia as a personal utopia, where all cultures and ethnic groups come together, connecting with the earth and the universe. As an artist who uses science fiction and mythology as tools for thinking about the world, Woolfalk is drawn to St. EOM’s approach to place-building. Through her installation, which will include original furniture from St. EOM’s reading parlor and an astrologer performing readings in the space, Woolfalk hopes to evoke a similar, culturally resistant mythology.
This year’s OAF Talk, “The Raw and the Cooked: Outsider Art Environments and Installation Art,” will be organized and moderated by Paul Laster and will take place at the Ace Hotel on Tuesday, January 16th. The hotel lobby will also be host to two exhibitions; an installation of drawings and paintings by Texan artist Ike Morgan curated by Shrine Gallery’s Scott Ogden; and Shear Joy, the scissors collection of Harley Spiller, aka Inspector Collector, on view at the Ace Hotel, Manhattan, from Jan. 5-31, 2018.
