Weekly Spotlight: Yvette Helin, FF Alumn, now online at https://franklinfurnace.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p17325coll1/id/99

Yvette Helin’s “Pedestrian Project” is captured with a 16-minute documentary VHS tape following 8 silent artists clad in black pedestrian costumes performing in New York City on November 7, 1990. The “Peds” occasionally carry similarly-styled props of dogs, children, and guns. As the performance progresses, the questions and interpretations of some individuals can be heard. One such passerby asks, “What is it for?” A commentary on bourgeois life was one suggestion. A critique or celebration of the cookie-cutter American dream may be another. Or are the performers simply a reflection of the individuals around them? The camera view shifts to the audience towards the end of the video, taking time to celebrate the talents and community of the people of New York. (Text by Rhea Murdeshwar, FF Intern Summer 2021)

The Weitzman School has appointed artist Every Ocean Hughes the Keith L. and Katherine S. Sachs Visiting Professor in the Department of Fine Arts for the 2021–2022 Academic Year. “Our students have gotten to know a dazzling array of artists since we hosted the inaugural Sachs Visiting Professor back in 2016,” said Fritz Steiner, dean and Paley Professor at the Weitzman School. “We’re delighted for Every to join the Penn community.”Every Ocean Hughes (EOH), formerly known as Emily Roysdon, is based in Stockholm, where she was professor of art at Konstfack University College of Arts, Craft, and Design from 2013-2021. Her work has included performance, photography, video, printmaking, and site-specific installations.

Beyond these media, her expansive output has also included curating exhibitions, as well as such projects as designing costumes for the band Le Tigre and a collaborative performance with the singer/songwriter Colin Self. Written text has also been a core part of EOH’s practice and she was a founding member of the queer feminist journal and artist collective LTTR. In many of her works, EOH mines the history of 20th-century avant-garde activities that took place in both institutional and public spaces. In particular, she is drawn to the ephemeral history of queer activists and artists. Another ongoing concern is the recognition of the complexities of identity, which often manifests in works that explore the intersection of physical movement and political action.

“For the recent four years, I have been researching in a field I call queer death, addressing questions of self-determination, mutual aid, survival, diverse kinship, and accountability. In these times of pandemic, uprisings, and deep conflict, I find this work even more engaging and relevant,” said EOH.“Every Ocean Hughes is centrally concerned with affectivity in all its valences. Through her art and writing, she seeks to disrupt discursive regimes wherever and whenever they appear. Her work challenges the idea that lived experience can be reduced to codified systems or articulable forms. Her work appears in the gaps within and between rules,” said Ken Lum, Marilyn Jordan Taylor Presidential Professor and chair of fine arts at Penn.

At Penn, EOH will be engaged with graduate students in the Department of Fine Arts. In the spring of 2022, she will give a public lecture and lead a seminar that culminates in a student-immersive trip. EOH is represented in Witch Hunt, an international group exhibition on view at the Hammer Museum and Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, through January 9, 2022, and over the coming two years will be included in exhibitions at Studio Voltaire, London, and Moderna Museet, Stockholm. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions internationally, including recent exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London; Tate Modern, London; and KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin.EOH holds a Bachelor of Arts from Hampshire College and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles. She also attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and, in 2019–20, was a fellow at Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University.

The Sachs Visiting Professorship has been previously held by Ernesto Pujol, who labels himself a “social choreographer;” Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley, video-based collaborators who script works performed on elaborate sets of their own creation; Ralph Lemon, a choreographer, writer, visual artist, and curator; Josiah McElheny, a sculptor, performance artist, writer and filmmaker best known for his use of glass with other materials; and alum Wael Shawky (MFA‘01), whose work tackles notions of national, religious and artistic identity through film, performance, and storytelling.

“In Franklin Furnace I had a loft that was big enough for wild and crazy rehearsals. Honestly, we didn’t rehearse all that much—mostly we gossiped and ate dinner together. Disband was an all-female No Wave performance group founded in New York in 1978 by Martha Wilson, Daile Kaplan and Barbara Ess. The band members were artists rather than musicians; while the group began with standard instruments, they discarded them quickly, focusing on their voices, harmonies, and corporeal percussion (clapping, stomping, etc). Ilona Granet, Donna Henes, Ingrid Sischy, Diane Torr, April Gornick and Barbara Kruger, who wrote some of their songs, were also active members.

Disband was very successful in New York feminist art circles. In 1980, Disband performed at the newly opened Feminist Art Institute on Spring Street, and Lucy Lippard invited them to entertain guests at her 40th anniversary party. Also in 1980, they were invited to perform in Italy at a performance art festival with Laurie Anderson, Chris Burden, Julia Heyward, Paul McCarthy and Richard Newton.

Disband disbanded in 1982 but in 2008 the members reunited to perform at P.S.1. Contemporary Art Center in New York for the exhibition Wack! Art and the Feminist Revolution.

On the occasion of the Carte Blanche given to Martha Wilson we present artists who have had a particular influence on her work, among them former Disband members Ilona Granet and Barbara Kruger.

Prior to becoming SoHo (an acronym for South of Houston Street), the area was a light manufacturing zone occupied by sweatshops in buildings that are now National Historic Landmarks. Deserted in the evenings and on the weekends, these buildings opened onto dark and beaten-up streets with no green spaces or community services. It wasn’t until the late ’60s when these buildings were taken over by “some crazy artists” who had the vision to turn them into live/work loft spaces that SoHo became the cultural model for the world. More information, along with a more comprehensive list of SoHo artists can be found on the main project webpage.

Yet, in spite of this phenomenal success & maybe because of it, many politicians are considering destroying it through up-zoning to allow for the construction of high-rise buildings that will put the historical uniqueness of this neighborhood in the shadows and shatter its spirit.

My co-curator, Lesley Heller, and exhibition advisors Joyce Pomeroy-Schwartz and Charlotta Kotik, want to raise awareness about the power of art to impact people’s lives as almost nothing else can.

CITYarts is actively reaching out to the New Mayor of NYC Eric Adams & Manhattan Borough President Marc Levine to come meet the artists of SoHo, have a conversation, and work towards understanding why we should contribute to preserving this unique neighborhood as a jewel in the crown of NYC, not destroying it!

A portion of CITYarts proceeds will be allocated to promoting the work of incarcerated American Indian artist Leonard Peltier in recognition of Human Rights week.

About Ichi Ikeda:

Ichi Ikeda graduated from Kyoto University. He has developed his artworks strongly connected with global environmental issues, especially concerning water, over the past 30 years. His interventions include international conferences and seminars, community activism, public performance, and interactive installations. He is one of the most unique artists who uses water as his medium and explores new visual expressions. Specially in the 21st Bienal Internacional de Artes de Sao Paulo in 1991, he, as a special invited artist, became the first Japanese to be in charge of the main stage (For your information, the person who was in charge of the main stage of the previous year was Joseph Beuys). In 1995, he was selected as “the world’s 12 artists,” for the 50th anniversary art calendar of the United Nations. in May 2008, he was selected as a representative of the East / Southeast Asia and Oceania area at the environment seminar held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, and made a proposal from Earth Art. In 2012, at the request of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, he created an environmental art project using the entire Shinobazu Pond in Ueno Park. 600 volunteers of all ages, occupations, and nationalities participated in the installation of the Shinobazu Pond, and it is reported that about one million people visited the pond during the month-long exhibition.

Infinite Mantra ( Never-ending Prayer)

“Creativity is boundless. Imagination is free. Believe in the infinite possibilities”.

As an artist I draw inspiration from all aspects of my life. My exploration and development in my yoga practice; through seeking to link the worldly and the transcendent, and my love of travel and culture have allowed me to further my skills and passion in the world of art.

My art lies between the figurative and surreal worlds and always holds a dreamlike quality to it, with heavy influences of esoteric, spiritual and mystical connections. When I create art, I am channeling an energy; like a clairvoyant receiving a message, I connect to an energy and it guides me. I love utilizing sacred geometry, astronomy, nature, patterns and shapes to create thought provoking compositions.

I feel that my art manifests the power of intuition. I hope that my work inspires people to go inward, so that they can access a deeper vision, to be reminded of the connections between material and spiritual experiences. and see magic in their lives.

David Bloom grew up and lives in Birmingham, Michigan, a community in the Metro Detroit area. He attended the University of Michigan for undergraduate studies and obtained an MBA from Michigan State University. In addition to his blooming artistic inclinations, David is an automotive purchasing professional at Ford, a civic activist, and a non-profit board member at a Goodwill environmental subsidiary.

In US Federal Court Bloom victoriously defended First Amendment and Michigan Open Meetings Act rights to speak at public meetings in Birmingham during public comment periods and to prevent the live broadcasts from being capriciously cut off. He is also an avid alternative rock concert goer and music lover. Bloom’s stories and photographs have been published by the Birmingham Eccentric and his artwork has been exhibited in the Los Angeles area at the Palos Verdes Art Center and San Fernando Valley Arts and Cultural Center.

He is currently collaborating with the Baldwin Public library in Birmingham to sponsor a 175 foot public art mural project overlooking the city’s centrally located downtown Shain Park.

Nina Sobell pioneered the use of video, computers, and interactivity in art, as well as performance on the Web since 1969, when she first used video to document participants’ undirected interactions with her sculptures at Cornell. She investigates the extent to which video enables her to manipulate the relation between time and space, and to create a vortex for human experience, in which the mediated event coincides with public experience, memory and relationships. She is interested in exploring notions of transformation, energy transfer, bridging the conscious and unconscious realms, and rendering the invisible visible through action and reaction. I see the process of creation as an integral part of the work, as important as the result.

Her work has been shown throughout the US, Europe, and Japan. Sobell presented Brainwave Drawings and Videophone Voyeur (1977) at Joseph Beuys’ Free International University at Documenta 6. Her work was included in Videoworks at the Whitney and Sunshine and Noir at the Hammer in LA curated by Paul McCarthy; A Feast for the Eyes, Kunst Forum, Vienna and Port, MIT. Getty Museum; de Saisset Museum; Banff Centre for the Arts; Manchester Gallery, England; Acme Gallery Archives, London; The Blanton Museum, Austin; CAM, Houston; the Zentrum fur Kunst und Medien Technologie, Karlsruhe; Archivo Storico delle Arti Contemporane, La Bienalle di Venezia, ICA London; DIA Foundation; Cornell University and many other institutions. Her work is in many private collections. She received awards from the NEA, NYSCA, NYFA and an Acker award in video 2021, among others. Video Data Bank and MLC Gallery represent her work.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York is pleased to announce Katya Grokhovsky as our 2021-2022 STAR resident. The STAR (Short Term Artist Residency) program is held in the TSA NY gallery space. During her time as a resident artist, Grokhovsky is using the gallery for the production, rehearsal and studio development of a new work entitled Phone Home.

Exploring loneliness, dissociation, anxiety, tedium, longing and alienation, Phone Home presents an accumulative exhibition-installation-performance-studio, which evolves and morphs through art-time marking into a dysfunctional uncanny domestic valley-landscape. Situated inside a soft-sculptural fiber installation environment, accompanied by drawings and archival collages, an alien visitor protagonist performs routine Sisyphean gestures-tasks, such as sewing, ironing, cutting, writing, erasing, eating, stomping and dancing. The space proposes a peripheral mirage of otherworldly terrain, reflecting on the pandemic living and its effect on our psyche, body, and home.

During the 2 month residency at Sculpture Space, Grokhovsky will begin work on a new, mixed media, multi year project, Point A, which focuses on exploring place, memory and displacement, investigating loss of identity, language, notion of home and origin, employing various mediums, techniques and materials, including installation, fiber, found object mixed media sculpture and video performances. Excavating personal archives and family history, Grokhovsky will attempt to reconstruct fragments of places which she inhabited as a child and a young woman, creating a mesh up of habitats and imagined absent sites.
