In 2021 Paris celebrates the American artist Martha Wilson, with whom we collaborate. We are happy to announce the three exhibitions taking place this year and the new edition, Journals, which we will have the pleasure of producing and publishing.

A. Halifax Collection, Musée National d’Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou, Paris
Focusing on her work from 1972 to 1974, the exhibition at the Centre Pompidou will present the artist’s early works made during her stay in Halifax, Canada. These photographs set the path for her work, and address the question of shapeshifting and the representation of icons, godmothers and the grotesque in the perception of power and femininity.

The exhibition at mfc-michèle didier gallery extends this questioning with a series of performances in which the artist embodies celebrities such as Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush or Tipper Gore.
Alongside these works and as part of a “carte blanche” proposed to Martha Wilson, we will present a group of artists whose works have been essential in her production, as well as in her approach to performance, gender and feminism, self-representation and activism.

We are pleased to invite you to Martha Wilson’s second exhibition at the mfc-michèle didier gallery.
The exhibition will present a series of videos entitled The Political and Performance Art Collection in which the artist embodies and performs political figures such as Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush and Tipper Gore.
While Wilson’s photographs play with the representation of archetypes in a rather dramatic and introspective style, the performance series The Political and Performance Art Collection displays a resolutely satirical register at the intersection of Burlesque and Pantomime. Martha Wilson adopts a number of codes that refer to the Pantomime into her performance’s works, and to Extravaganza, itself inherited from the Victorian Burlesque imported into the United States in the mid-19th century. Also known as Travesty, this theatrical genre is a pastiche, a parody in which a story, a text or a character is re-enacted with the aim of giving it a contentious and subversive character, while retaining a comic dimension.
In the continuity of her research on the role given to women in society, the First Lady is a new Model of representation directly associated with power. Thus, in her imitation work, Martha Wilson does not seek to perfectly mimic the First Ladies, she wears them, uses them, as the title of the video: Martha Wilson Wears Nancy Reagan attests. In itself, the First Lady is an image, an outfit that Martha Wilson enfolds in the manner of a grotesque ventriloquist, making them speak, sing or gesticulate, turning Nancy Reagan into a character as strange and eccentric as the Frank-N-Furter of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
In parallel, and as part of a Carte blanche proposed to Martha Wilson, we will present in the exhibition the artists who had a significant influence on her work. Their works have been determinant in her own production, as well as in her approach to performance art, gender and feminism, self-representation and activism, and the question of art. These include works by Vito Acconci, Lynda Benglis, Judith Bernstein, Ilona Granet, Barbara Kruger, Suzy Lake, Howardena Pindell and Carolee Schneemann, FF Alumns.
Journals. This focus on the early years of Martha Wilson’s work will be further enhanced with the publication of Journals by mfc-michèle didier. The publication is a selection by Martha Wilson of pages from her diaries that document her experience as a woman and artist between 1965 and 1983. Setting up an inner dialogue, Journals of Martha Wilson is punctuated with personal notes, work notes, considerations, addresses to herself and to her relatives. The publication delivers a unique point of view, the psyche of an artist in the making, staging her work but also its representation in a form of introspection that mirrors her own performance practice.
We are also pleased to announce our participation to FIAC 2021!
The project presented at FIAC will be a direct extension of the exhibition at the gallery, offering a Carte blanche to Martha Wilson who will present her own performative works alongside works by Lynda Benglis, and Judith Bernstein, Ilona Granet, Barbara Kruger, Suzy Lake, Howardena Pindell and Carolee Schneemann, FF Alumns.

Dissolving Borders is a group exhibition featuring the works of members of the New Latinx Art Collective. Artists in the show respond to circumstances of personal, social and political boundaries with artworks that “dissolve borders” and connect. Their works explore notions of resilience, strength and empathy in the face of social turmoil in today’s America. This exhibition is a rich tapestry of visual artwork, photography, performance and video art. In addition, we are hosting a number of in-person FREE workshops on a variety of topics in our wonderful gallery space in the Upper East Side.

Sirreras Fem proposes an unlocking, a turn, a challenge to the barriers that limit what we want to be. This performance is a roar, not to impose the law of the strongest, but to claim a space of freedom to be through the work of three women who come together to say this body, this place, this community is us.
This is the first collaboration of Arantxa Araujo, Verónica Peña and Yali Romagoza, who are members of the New LatinX Art Collective.
About the Artists:
Arantxa Araujo
Arantxa Araujo is a Mexican artist with a background in neuroscience. Her work is essentially multidisciplinary, feminist, meditative and rooted in bio-behavioral research and technology. Explorations of gender constructions, performativity and identity, and the politics of migration are seen and experienced in her installations, which include new media, video, sound, photography, mapping, light, and performance. Her work has been shown in the Brooklyn Museum, at the Radical Women LatinAmerican Art Exhibit, Grace Exhibition Space, Glasshouse Gallery, The Queens Museum, Art in Odd Places in NYC; RAW during Miami Art Week; Illuminus Festival in Boston, and SPACE Gallery and Bunker Projects in Pittsburgh; in Mexico, at Monumento a la Revolución and La Explanada del MUAC, during the Hemispheric Institute’s Encuentro; also participated in Nuit Blanche Festival in Saskatoon, Canada.
Araujo is a Franklin Furnace Fund for performance art awardee, BAC and LMCC grantee and has received support through numerous residencies and fellowships including Leslie-Lohman Museum Artist Fellowship, Creative Capital taller, ITP Camp and EMERGENYC. Araujo was awarded a full scholarship from Mexican Government Institution CONACYT. Verónica Peña
Verónica Peña (Spain/USA) is an interdisciplinary performance artist, curator, and international-community advocate. Her work explores absence, separation, and the search for human harmony through Performance Art. Her performance installations combine underwater submersion, visual metamorphosis, and audience participation to address global issues of migration, cross-cultural dialogue, peaceful resistance, public liberation, fluidity, and women’s empowerment. Peña has exhibited and performed primarily in Europe and America. In the US: NARS Foundation (2021), Coaxial Arts Foundation (2021), Pioneer Works (*2020 postponed due to Covid-19), Grace Exhibition Space (2020), Smack Mellon, Triskelion Arts, Queens Museum, Hemispheric Institute, SAIC (Visiting Artist), Times Square Alliance, Armory Show, Defibrillator Art Gallery, Gabarron Foundation, Dumbo Arts Festival, among others. She is currently an artist-in-residence at NARS Foundation, was selected for Creative Capital NYC Taller 19-20, and received a Franklin Furnace Fund 17- 18. Yali Romagoza
Yali Romagoza is a Cuban-born multidisciplinary artist currently based in Queens, NY. She graduated with a Master’s degree in Fashion, Body, and Garment from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in Art History from the University of Havana, Cuba. Her works have been included in the Gothenburg Biennial; Havana Biennial; Bétonsalon, Paris; Liverpool Biennial; Art and Social Activism Festival, NY; The Immigrant Artist Biennial, NY. Romagoza has performed at Links Hall Theater, Chicago; White Box, NY; Teatro LATEA, NY; Art in Odd Places, NY; Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, NC; Grace Exhibition Space, NY; NY Latin American Art Triennial, NY. I hope this finds you and your beloved well!
I’m delighted to share some recent news and upcoming projects:
I’ve been promoted to half-time faculty and Director of Critical Studies at New York Academy of Art. I’m exceedingly excited about the possibilities of new position and to continue the pedagogical work I’ve done for over two decdes.
This spring, I return to Sarah Lawrence College for my third semester as guest faculty to teach my performance art class. My wonderful colleagues in the art department have invited me to curate a group exhibition opening in November (tentatively titled “Audience/Camera/Performer”) which features five extraordinary interdisciplinary performance artists: Elliot Reed, and Wanda Raimundi Ortiz, Rashayla Marie-Brown, Seung-Min Lee, and Kris Grey, FF Alumns. (Including a program of public performances depending on pandemic protocols.)
Beginning next month, I’ll be in residence for six weeks at KinoSaito, located in Verplanck, New York and feet from the Hudson River in a newly renovated studio loft of a consecrated building. Slave Rebellion returns to New York
Wherever people were enslaved, there were slave rebellions. Enslaved Africans rebelled in New York city on April 6, 1712, and the largest slave rebellion in US history took place 100 years later outside of New Orleans.
This was the 1811 revolt that my 2019 community engaged performance Slave Rebellion Reenactment restaged and reinterpreted. Slave rebellions are righteous and inspiring, and so was this reenactment. Understanding slave rebellions is foundational for understanding the US and thinking about how we get free today.
So I’m thrilled and delighted that the large-scale performance stills and flags from this project will be exhibited in NY in a solo show at Cristin Tierney Gallery—bringing rebellion back to NY. If you’re in the area, I hope to see you at the opening September 17.
I’m also excited to have work in a group show in PPOW in NY that opens TOMORROW, Friday, September 10.

Awards
The Frieze Impact Prize, launched in partnership with the Art for Justice Fund and Endeavor Impact, recognizes artists contributing to the movement to end mass incarceration in the US and those directly impacted by the system. I’m delighted to be a recipient of the inaugural award in recognition of my 2014 community engaged artwork Wanted. The award was also given to two amazing artists, Mary Baxter and Maria Gaspar.
I have recently been named a Senior Fellow at the Lunder Institute for American Art at Colby College in Maine. During this fellowship year I will do research on fugitivity and criminality. I will be thinking about some of my favorite criminals—self liberated enslaved people, conductors on the Underground Railroad, people who hid Jews from the Nazis, networks that provided abortions in the US pre-Roe, and more.
Misc
CJ Hunt has recently released The Neutral Ground a documentary film that looks at the battles over white supremacist monuments. The film includes some footage and interesting observations about Slave Rebellion Reenactment. It was recently broadcast on PBS. See it if you can.

We are now taking pre-orders for Godzilla: Asian American Arts Network 1990–2001, a comprehensive anthology of writings, art projects, publications, correspondence, organizational documents, and other archival ephemera from the trailblazing Asian artist collective. Edited by curator Howie Chen, this publication includes full essays and contextual material detailing the critical genealogies embodied by the group as well as its wide-ranging activities.
All pre-orders will ship out upon the book’s release in early October and the publication will be discounted to $25.00 throughout the pre-order period.The collective known as Godzilla: Asian American Art Network was formed in 1990 to support the production of critical discourse around Asian American art and increase the visibility of Asian American artists, curators, and writers, who were negotiating a historically exclusionary society and art world. Founded by Ken Chu, Bing Lee, and Margo Machida, Godzilla produced exhibitions, publications, and community collaborations that sought to stimulate social change through art and advocacy. For more than a decade, the diasporic group, having grown from a local organization into a nationwide network, confronted institutional racism, Western imperialism, anti-Asian violence, the AIDS crisis, and representations of Asian sexuality and gender, among other urgent issues.
Godzilla created a social space for diasporic Asian artists and art professionals, including members Tomie Arai, Karin Higa, Byron Kim, Paul Pfeiffer, Eugenie Tsai, Alice Yang, Lynne Yamamoto, among others. Envisioning a lateral and porous network, Godzilla was independently run by successive steering committees that included Diyan Achjadi, Tomie Arai, Todd Ayoung, Monica Chau, Debi-Ray Chaudhuri, Allan deSouza, Skowmon Hastanan, Arlan Huang, Michi Itami, Jenni Kim, Franky Kong, Jeanette Louie, Yong Soon Min, Helen Oji, Sanda Zan Oo, Athena Robles, Carol Sun, Eugenie Tsai, Maureen Wong, Lynne Yamamoto, Rubina Yeh, and Charles Yuen.

Avant-Garde-Arama was originally created in 1980 by performance artist Charles Dennis and musician/visual artist Jeffrey Isaac at the legendary East Village, Manhattan venue Performance Space 122 (P.S. 122) now Performance Space New York and continues to be presented there.
Producer Charles Dennis was a co-founder of P.S. 122 and has presented his critically acclaimed inter-disciplinary dance, performance art and video in that venue for the past 40 years.
In 2019 Charles Dennis moved to Hurley, NY and began searching for opportunities to bring avant-garde, experimental works to the Hudson Valley. That search led to the Mountain View Studio in Woodstock where, in July 2021, the first Hudson Valley performance of “Avant Garde-Arama Lands in Woodstock” was presented.
Avant-Garde-Arama presents the artists in an informal, cabaret setting hosted by Charles Dennis. Refreshments including beer and wine will be available.

Charles Dennis – performs a live dance duet with his 2016 ice dance film “Exorcism on Ice” with music by David Telson.
Claire Porter performs Tour Guide. Written, choreographed, and performed by Claire Porter. Inspired by the possibility of seeing ourselves in history, the piece portrays a Tour Guide directing us to look at the big picture via a Diorama. As she directs us to look more and more closely, we see more detail and are drawn further in. We end up seeing ourselves as part of history, as she catapults into the big picture.
David Linton will present a brand-new guitar based solo performance entitled:” CithaRodeo Part 1 – ‘Sonic Agora’ “. The last time David performed at Avant Garde Arama was probably around 1982-83 at PS 122.
Sal Cataldi – Spaghetti Eastern Music is the solo project of NYC & Saugerties based guitarist/keyboardist Sal Cataldi. Cataldi fuses Eastern beats, blues, electronica and funk- flavored guitar instrumentals with acoustic vocal tunes straight out of the John Martyn/Nick Drake songbook. The New York Times says “Cataldi’s original instrumentals and acoustic vocal tunes have a beat unmistakably his own” while Time Out New York observes: “his largely instrumental, Eastern-influenced jams are infused with some delicate guitar work and hauntingly moody atmosphere.” Called “beautiful and unique” by WFUV’s Mixed Bag and “part Sergio Leone fever dream, part Ravi Shankar raga, a whirling dervish of musical creation” by Hudson Valley One. His solo guitar score for Charles Dennis’ dance piece “2x2x4,” performed at the first installment of Avant Garde Arama Lands in Woodstock, is being released September 25 on Bad Egg Records. Cataldi’s spoken word collaborator, William Lessard, has writing thathas appeared or is forthcoming in American Poetry Review, Best American Experimental Writing, FENCE, and the Southwest Review. He is also the Poetry & Hybrids editor at Heavy Feather Review.
Artist Biographies:
Alex Romania makes multidisciplinary performance and video work at the crux of expansive task and deteriorating form, investigating bodies of cultural debris amidst the invisible everyday and toxic ingestions, consuming, purging, and breaking apart. Romania’s work delves into spaces of the unimaginable, staring into the unknown to consider a crude and splendid humanity, embracing the unruly to liberate the governed body. Romania has presented work and taught internationally at venues such as Sub Rosa (Athens, Greece), Abrons Arts Center (NYC), Grace Exhibition Space (NYC) Brooklyn Studios for Dance (NYC), Glasshouse ArtLifeLab (NY), Rosekill (NY), Panoply Performance Laboratory, ABC No Rio (NYC), Huerto Roma Verde (DF, Mexico), Casa Viva (DF, Mexico), Human Resources (Los Angeles), Encuentro (Lima, Peru), UV Estudios (Buenos Aires, Argentina), the Pillsbury House (Minneapolis), and el Museo del Arte Contemporáneo (Lima, Peru). Romania has worked with artists such as Kathy Westwater, De Facto Dance, Catherine Galasso, Andy de Groat, Eddie Peake, Simone Forti, Éva Mag, Michele Beck, and has designed video and objects for multiple works by Antonio Ramos at venues such as High Line Arts, the Chocolate Factory Theater, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, and has worked on film projects with artists such as Sarah White-Ayón, Therese Shechter/Trixie Films, and collaborations with Hegemonix and Stacy Lynn Smith. Romania was a 2018-2020 Movement Research Artist in Resident, and has held residencies at Brooklyn Studios for Dance, Abrons Arts Center, Chez Bushwick, Chashama, Tofte Lake Center, SPACE at Ryder Farm, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Old Furnace Artist Residency. Charles Dennis is an interdisciplinary artist, choreographer, director/producer, video cameraman/editor and proprietor of Charles Dennis Productions, a company that produces & distributes digital media content for artists and business clients. Charles has been an active participant in downtown New York dance and performance for over 40 years. In the 1970’s he performed in many of theater director Robert Wilson’s early works. In 1979 Charles co-founded Performance Space 122, one of this country’s most active presenters of new dance and performance. He created and performed solo and large group community-oriented performances at P.S. 122 and other venues from 1980- 2000, receiving numerous fellowships. In 2000 Charles started Charles Dennis Productions where he works as a cameraman, editor, director and producer of digital media content for a host of clients. He also creates short films that explore the creative possibilities of digital video art.
Claire Porter is a writer, dancer and choreographer who has performed in Scotland, Germany, Poland, Holland, Latvia, Korea and India and in the US at The Joyce Theater, Town Hall, American Dance Festival, Lucille Ball Comedy Festival, Bates Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and the Florida Dance Festival. Porter is a Guggenheim Fellow and has received NEA Choreography Fellowships, NJ State Council on the Arts Choreography Fellowships, NewMusicUSA Awards, a Rockefeller Foundation Residency at Bellagio Center Italy and Mid-Atlantic Choreography Fellowships. She choreographs for her Claire Porter / PORTABLES, other dance companies, faculty members and University Dance Companies. Porter performs her award winning Namely, Muscles, the poetic enactment of all the muscles of the body and then some, at body conferences, poetry festivals, medical schools and theater festivals. Her current project, Grammar Glamour, includes Sentenced to Sentences, Falling for Prepositions, Pronoun Emergency and more. Porter teaches Laban Movement Analysis and Creative Process for the MFA Dance program at Montclair State University and Creativity as Practice for Fairleigh Dickinson University.
David Linton is a musician and multimedia artist with roots in the downtown nyc scene of the late 70’s & early ’80’s. Initially a drummer his frequent collaborations with dance, performance and theater artists (Karole Armitage, DANCENOISE, The Wooster Group…
etc) contributed to his practice branching out and expanding through the ensuing decades to include electronic media and his own modes of multi-media performance and installation (including ‘live cinema’, event design, and the analog video revival… etc). She has presented programs and performed in concerts, assemblies, classes, and workshops in schools, colleges, museums, and other cultural and community venues, here and abroad. In this exhibition, there are four recent Color Crowd paintings, painted with oil on canvas. Two are rectangular and two are tondos. The imagery is arranged in complex ensembles that rise from the bustle of my thoughts and feelings as they reveal themselves in the making.
The two larger rectangular paintings are divided by a caesura, a kind of seam at which the forms on either side of it don’t match. In one the seam is vertical and in the other it is horizontal.
Two small diptychs from the A/Z group of 1974 are included. In each, vertical brushstrokes on one panel are interrupted by a horizontal pencil line that also removes paint, while in its counterpart the opposite happens. The gap between the two when they are installed is the pivotal void that links them.
I have also made two small Relocation paintings to activate the wall above a white and a black cabinet in the gallery. The white painting is placed above the black cabinet and the Black above the white.

Opening reception 6-9 on the 1st floor gallery Maryland Art Place. The14Karat Cabaret, a performance project located at MAP for over 25 years. Directed and organized by Baltimore artist Laure Drogoul, the project was conceived as a place to experiment with new forms, challenge expectations and experiment with new genres of art making. The project presented hundreds of local, national and some international artists. The14Karat Cabaret exhibition at Map will feature ephemera, photos, posters, performing objects and video of the history of the project from it’s beginning in 1989.

Tech/Know/Future/ From Slang to Structure is a critical response to technological systems within art addressing the issues of identity, history and abstraction, placing the viewer at the intersection of the past, present and future. Eleven diverse cross-disciplinary artists will use their creative practices to establish new relationships among technology, knowledge and time through augmented reality, artificial intelligence, sound, video, textiles and works on paper.
The exhibition brings together a group of innovative artists including: Morehshin Allahyari, Salome Asega, Nancy Baker Cahill, Stephanie Dinkins, Carla Gannis, Taehee Kim, LoVid, Amelia Marzec, Olivia Mole, Sondra Perry, and Casey Reas.

Artist Talk: 9/11 RENEWAL / REBIRTH
with RT Livingston
Join us for an artist talk with RT Livingston regarding her new Library exhibit, 9/11 RENEWAL / REBIRTH commemorating the 20th anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11.
The UC Santa Barbara Library recently launched the 9/11 RENEWAL / REBIRTH project, an online exhibition featuring Livingston’s eyewitness account of the year following the tragic events of September 11, 2001. From late September 2001 until the first anniversary of 9/11 in September 2002, she documented the sad and painstakingly slow renewal and rebirth of Lower Manhattan, equipped only with a small Olympus Stylus Epic 35mm point-and-shoot camera as well as a small 8mm cassette Sony video camera. The exhibition includes 100 photos and a compilation video documenting the rebirth of the area, all of which are part of the UCSB Library’s Special Research Collections.
The artist talk will be moderated by Danelle Moon, Director of Special Research Collections.

This is the first newsletter I have sent out in nearly a year. I hope it finds you as well and as ok as possible in these ever uncertain times. I have been focussing my energy mostly on my PhD, along with a Climate Justice Group I helped set up with a few other PhD researchers. For the last three months, however, I have been working at a start up art space, Hamilton MAS in Felixstowe, Suffolk as part of CHASE DTP supported PhD Placement. Proxy Bodies is a collaborative exhibition I have put together at the end of this, exploring ideas and lived realities of having and keeping a body going in an uber-connected, politically & ecologically unstable world – among many other drags, pressures and pleasures.

Research Residency & Installation
In August, I had the use of the Hamilton MAS street-facing space myself, which gave me the chance to drag some some old work out of its boxes. I revisited two key projects: Conversational Traces, a series of hand printed c-prints made from 35mm negatives of from .png screengrabs taken during Skype calls in 2008-14, and Mysterious at First Sight / Impressive Connections, a slide show piece from 2002 which puts hand written slogans taken from mobile phone adverts from 2000-2002 alongside my own (now very outdated looking) snapshots from the same period. Alongside these I produced new prints for #Sergina, with QR codes that brought a cacophany of sound from different mobile phones into the space on the private view evening, each image’s code linking to a different song / video / instructional dance video / questionairre.
I am very grateful to my partner Roux Malherbe for making this very beautiful record of this.

Episode 4 of Is My Body Out of Date? The Drag of Physicality in the Digital Age
Episode 4 of of #Sergina’s repetative soap opera took place in August with Stephanie Ballantine at iPak’s Sexuality Summer School. Through screenshare and re-iterated scripts, this performance lecture reuses and regurgitates material from previous editions, making it difficult to distinguish what or who is now, and what then. Episode 3, which took place in June 2019 – also via Zoom due to not wanting to fly across the world to deliver a 20 minute presentation – was published in IDEA journal as an e-book last year, and will be free to access from December.
