Weekly Spotlight: ŠKART, FF Alumn, now online at https://franklinfurnace.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p17325coll1/id/67/rec/117
This week we spotlight “Survival Coupons,” a 22-minute VHS film from 2000 directed by the ŠKART group (Dragan Protic and Đorđe Balmazovic) of Belgrade, Serbia. “Survival Coupons” compiles multiple short clips from ŠKART’s Franklin Furnace sponsored project in New York City and Belgrade. The film depicts ŠKART’s diverse “critical communication” strategies and methods, with a focus on their approach to the general public in transit, revealing the contrast between the connotation of freedom attached to traveling and the erasure of personal freedom during the war in Serbia. Beginning with the distribution of ŠKART coupons on trains, and then at public demonstrations, and ending with street art, “Survival Coupons” calls attention to ŠKART’s progressive efforts to help people regain individuality and dignity. Taller Puertorriqueño is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Gabriel Martínez, curated by Camilo Alvarez.
In his first major show at Taller Puertorriqueño, “Un Viaje Entre” (A Trip Between), Gabriel Martínez returns to his Little Havana roots reflecting upon various topics related to his Cuban-American upbringing: culture, history, politics, and religion The works on view explore the cost of migration, the formation of memory, and the ongoing conversations and missed connections between Miami and Havana.

6. Buzz Spector, FF Alumn, at Rockford Art Museum, IL, Feb. 4-May 29
In “Reading Matter,” Buzz Spector’s exhibit at the Rockford Art Museum, the artist will feature his large-format Polaroid photographs of books, whether from his own library or from various private or public collections. This rarely exhibited body of work will show the range of Buzz’s interest in the books others read or collect.
Also on view will be Buzz’s drawings, handmade paper works, and prints, dating back to the 1970s. The centerpiece of the show is A Confluence, a new book construction for the museum, using more than 5,000 books donated from the Rockford and Evanston Public Libraries.
“Buzz Spector: Reading Matter” will be on view February 4 – May 29, 2022

This exhibition is shaped by the forces of proximity, friendship, generosity, and longevity. Buchanan, Hafif, and Smith met in the newly formed MFA program at UC Irvine and remained friends for life. Structured around the subjects of bodies, communication, and dwelling, this exhibition reveals a remarkable range of pursuits explored by three artists for the past 50 years. Though each followed their own trajectory, this exhibition highlights the differences as well as the “empathic overlaps” of these life-long friends. Organized by guest curator Michael Ned Holte.
